Be honest – How many of us were feeling some sort of burnout before we were struck with COVID 19? It seems like an eternity ago, but I for one can recall feeling slightly overwhelmed and sluggish from a long prior string of events, heading into a packed March that was sure to lead me in for a nosedive. My, my how the tables have turned. Writing this, it feels almost ridiculous to be complaining about a packed schedule with many of us wishing we could go back to those times. However, in this pandemic, I was able to find a smattering of positivity. I absolutely fell back in love with my craft of videography. I found myself making videos just to make videos, editing old footage, and just reconnecting with that creative kid who made videos for his friends because why not. I fell back into alignment with why I do this in the first place and I really think it is important that we take this time to do what we do for us. Are you a DJ or a musician? Play some of your favorite songs, create a new mix, or just play for yourself because you love it. What if you’re a florist? Create an arrangement you love for your home or maybe make one for someone going through a tough time. The point is, I think this is a phenomenal time to experiment with the core of your business and reflect on why you love doing what you do. I think it is safe to say most of us got into our business because we love the product or service we are selling. When we are creating for others, it can become extremely taxing which is ultimately what leads to burnout. You might end up asking yourself, why am I even doing this in the first place? Now is the time to remind yourself why you love it! There’s no better way of doing that than taking some time out for yourself to enjoy it. Forget about business, just for a day, and create something that will trigger that moment for you. For me, it was going through footage I had shot during my college graduating and putting together an epic video for my friends and family. That was when the lightbulb went off for me and all of the feelings came rushing back. This also doesn’t just need to be a COVID thing, in fact, I think it is imperative to engage in these types of practices often even when you’re busy. I would like to start implementing something like this maybe once a month where I work on a project that is completely and totally for my personal enjoyment and creativity. I know, the last thing you want to think about is shooting personal photos if you’re a photographer or experimenting with makeup if you’re a makeup artist, but I think grounding practices like this can not be really gratifying, but truly center us and remind us that this is more than just a business. With that being said, comment below a project, you’ve been wanting to work on that you can do for yourself this week! Thanks for reading and cheers to your personal enjoyment!
